FAQs

Do I need any pottery experience to join a class at Clayfolk?

No, you don't need any experience to start. If you're searching for a pottery class in Folkestone, our guided sessions are built for complete beginners and cover the basics of clay, wheels, glazing, and safe studio use. We also run studio inductions so you can feel comfortable from day one.

Can experienced potters use the studio on their own?

Yes, experienced makers can book Self-directed Freedom Sessions and work at their own pace. You'll have access to professional equipment, hand-building tools, Slips and glazes, plus the support you need to get on with your own pieces. It's a practical setup for throwing, shaping, and finishing work. We’ll handle the drying and firing to ensure your work survives the kiln!

What makes you different?

Yes, gift vouchers are available at Clayfolk. They're a simple way to give someone a session, workshop, master class, or studio induction in Folkestone. If you're buying for a curious beginner or a potter who already knows their way around clay, it's a thoughtful gift that feels personal.

We are Clayfolk

Discover the story behind Clayfolk, a ceramics studio in Folkestone with community at its heart.

Founded by makers who wanted more space to create, Clayfolk brings together people who love working with clay, from curious beginners to experienced potters. Learn how we started, meet the team, and see why we’re building more than just a studio - we’re building a creative community.

The Clayfolk Studio

Shelves filled with various unfinished ceramic pottery pieces including bowls, plates, and cups, some with handwritten labels, and a handwritten note on the shelf stating 'All round baits for wheel work only.'

Explore our studio and get a feel for the Clayfolk space.

Our fully accessible studio is equipped for every stage of the making process. In the throwing area, we have six Shimpo wheels and two large ride-on wheels. For hand-building, we offer generous workbenches stocked with tools, an extruder, and a slab roller. There is a large reclaim station with bats and vats to recycle clay, alongside a well-stocked glazing bay with buckets of slips and glazes. Finally, our two trusty kilns fire work from the drying racks to completion.

As our gallery evolves, we hope to capture the life of the studio - the people, the process, and the creativity that defines Clayfolk.
